Review: War To End All Wars

The thirteenth studio album War To End All Wars from the Swedish guitar maestro Yngwie Malmsteen is an interesting and quite shocking affair. Though the album boasts the kind of speed metal that Malmsteen is known for, the production hands down kills any kind of enjoyment that the listener could get from this record.

Sitting at well over an hours length, War To End All Wars is disturbing in one too many ways. In terms of the music, it is pretty stereotypical speed metal. Yngwie Malmsteen himself has released multiple albums in this style through out the ’80s, early ’90s and even post release that have surpassed this record by a long shot. The song writing is decent but unmemorable and the actual playing, whilst professional is by the book and absolutely nothing new whatsoever.

War To End All Wars features yet another vocal performance from Mark Boals, a fine singer that has gone to waste on this record. His impressive vocal skills is wasted in such lame lyrical content. Drummer John Macaluso is completely drowned out by having one of the worst kit sounds I think I have ever heard in a professional recording. The drums have been mixed to the point that they are barely audible and it wouldn’t matter how hard the sticksman hit them, his instrument would sound absolutely appalling. Sadly the awful sound reflects on the guitars also. Malmsteen does not use the usual smooth guitar tone that he is known for. Instead he uses this coarse cheap sounding effect that would suit some pub circuit grindcore band.

The fact this album made it out of the studio in this condition is absolutely shocking. Had the sound been touched up and given a good smooth production, it would be a passable but enjoyable album. But as it is, this is easily one of the worst sounding albums I have heard from such a high professional standard. Who ever was responsible should be hung, drawn and quartered without a chance to explain themselves.
