Review: 1987

The hair metal period of the 1980s produced an over whelming amount of crap. Everything from Poison to Tiger Tailz failed to produce anything of quality so it makes you wonder why so many British hard rock/metal bands tried to mould their sound on this then recent trend. One of those bands were David Coverdale’s Whitesnake who might of accidentally produced a classic album.

It still puzzles me to this day at how a blues based rock band managed to turn into one of the most commercial permed heavy metal acts of their generation. In the space of two albums the band went from sitting comfortably with Rainbow and Gillan to rocking out with the best of the American bands like Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. The circumstances that lead to this are quite questionable (read about it else where), they also took what these bands were doing and cranked it up to 10 producing one of the best heavy metal albums of 1987 or the ’80s in general.

I can instantly hear old Whitesnake fans cringe at the thought of that last line but instant classics like Still Of The Night, Bad Boys and Give Me All Your Love are not just instant party classics but sound fantastic live on stage. Naturally there are lots of songs about love and sex (Looking For Love, Is This Love, Straight For The Heart) but they also feature some stunning guitar work and some of the best vocal performances from David Coverdale.

In terms of production, this is easily the best of the ’80s Whitesnake albums. The band sound absolutely thunderous as they pound out these songs, they ooze with sexuality and energy. It is a little dated by today’s standards but there is nothing wrong with being a product of your time when it sounds this good.

Even though the album features the cracking re-recording of Here I Go Again (’87).  This great single is a favourite of every fat house wife and a song that every Whitesnake fan never wants to hear again. But do not let that turn you off from the rest of the album. There is an abundance of phenomenal guitar playing, hard hitting drums and passionate vocals. You really couldn’t ask more of a band in 1987.
