Old Mother Hell is an up beat heavy metal band hailing from Mannheim, Germany. Their self titled debut album was released in February, 2018 after being released digitally in late 2017 through Cruz Del Sur Records.
Listening to Old Mother Hell, I heard a lot of old school bands wrapped up in a new school sound. The band have a knack for creating a good solid rhythm that helps move the songs along at a good pace. The guitar and bass tones are suitably heavy and work great with the kind of music the band is putting out. The groups drummer also puts out some good beats, throwing in some suitable fills every now and again.
My favourite track on the album was by far the epic, Mountain. But I found a lot to like through out. Kneel To No God, is a pretty good song and I also really enjoyed Howling Wolves. But truth be told, the songs here are all good and very enjoyable. They are a bit Black Sabbath in tone and riffing style. But it reminded me a lot of other modern groups like, Orchid or The Vintage Caravan. Granted, they are considerably heavier than the latter but have that same late ’70s aesthetic that I love in heavy metal.
What really works in Old Mother Hell’s favour is the fact that their album is well paced and short. It is a good solid thirty four minutes long and manages to put itself between being too short and too long. It is an adequate length and really works in its favour. The only down side to the album for me personally was the fact I felt it was a bit too muddy. Not bad enough to bother me, but it would have been nice had the bass been pulled back a little.
At the end of the day, Old Mother Hell does exactly what a band should do. They take a perfectly good sound and they make some good songs out of it. This is a good album and I would definitely recommend checking it out. These guys may be worth keeping an eye on.
