Locked and Loaded, is the debut EP from the speed metal band Nervcast. This group utilises a nice range of metal riffs and licks, mixing up with a lot of energy.
It is clear from the opening track, Chemical Solution, that Nervcast are fans of the early thrash metal days. This cracking four minute song has some heavy juicy guitar riffs and some lead vocals that have a striking resemblance to the early days of Metallica’s James Hetfield, so much so that I honestly don’t think I could tell the two apart. With later songs like Fallen Angels and Moonstruck, not only does the band change up the tempo and rhythm a bit, but really show that they know how to write a good song. The final track, Locked and Loaded, has a little more of a modern feel to it drawing comparisons to Shogun era Trivium. Don’t let that put you off if you’re not a fan, the song itself is a tasteful up beat metal song like the previous three and rounds the EP off perfectly.
I liked how the lead vocals shows a lot more dynamics with some very dynamics vocals ranging from a punkish snarl to almost King Diamond falsetto highs. As for the rest of the band, the rhythm section is solid and do their part without any unnecessary showing off. The guitar playing has some particularly nice twin solos and great use rhythm in general. It was nice to hear a band resisting the urge to play as much notes in a bar as they possibly could and gave some thought into how their music would sound.
The overall sound of Locked and Loaded is a little lacklustre to say the least. It is clear that the band sound good, consistent and quite tight. The guitars have a satisfying heavy sound with the bass and drums packing a suitable punch. But there was a lot of audible artifacting going on in the left channel of my speaker system, this naturally was very off putting. It is a shame really because I really did enjoy this bands music and I do believe that they have a lot of promise for the future.
