Review: Exhumation – The Early Years

A lot of people frown on bands re-recording their old hits. I always wondered why it’s such a problem, especially when it sounds this good. This is Grave Digger’s Exhumation – The Early Years.

If there is one thing to say about early ’80s heavy metal it is that whilst the music was magnificent, the sound was utter crap. For some band’s it was worse than normal, so I think it is only fair for a band to go back and re-record these rough classics, giving them a good kick up the arse with a lot of love, respect and a much better sound. This sums up the new Grave Digger disc perfectly.

Despite the fact there was a lot worse off bands, to hear these early songs with this sound is just great to hear. Witch Hunter and War Games sound brilliant on Exhumation – The Early Years and Shoot Her Down is possibly my favourite of the disc. The great thing about these songs is that you would never know they are so old. The band do not sound old and tired like some of the stuff you find in England (Iron Maiden). They sound just as energetic as they did in their youth and in my honest opinion sound a lot better now. Much like Saxon, Grave Digger have aged very well. They still have that great old school sound and attitude but with that added heavy sound of modern metal.

There is not much else to say really. This is a great compilation package that fans will no doubt enjoy. Bringing back some well loved oldies is well worth it, especially when the band in question have put this much effort into it. Exhumation – The Early Years, is worth having even if it is only for the two new tracks, My Private Morning Hell and Young And Dangerous, which are pretty good by themselves.
