Review: The Ichor Carcinoma

Usually one man bands tend to sound almost amateurish due to their lack if input from other musicians, but every now and again you get one that does it well. The Ichor Carcinoma, from Buried Realm is one of those albums.

The Ichor Carcinoma, is an interesting album in that it has a wide variety of styles on it. You get some power metal, death metal and some straight up traditional heavy metal moments. But despite the variety, it works surprisingly quite well, perhaps due to the immense talent that was involved in the making of this album. The band’s lead Josh Dummer has done a great job putting this music together and it is definitely something to be a little proud about. You will also find guest appearances from Christopher Amott and many other well known musicians. These appearances create some nice flavour and just adds to the professionalism of the record.

Despite the fact that I think this is a very well made record, there are a few things about it that I think needs a good change. First off, the production is a little light on the lower end. The music is great but it needs more of a kick, to bring out the bass and drums a little more would really make the record all that more powerful. There is also a matter of the lead vocals, it is a complete mish mash of growling and clean vocals. This creates the only inconsistent quality the record has. It almost sounds lazy in places. A proper professional singer, the kind found in all those amazing Italian power metal bands, would bring this music to a whole new level.

Complaints aside, this is a great record and one that fans of modern heavy metal should definitely look into. It is currently available on the Buried Realm Bandcamp page and I highly recommend you check it out.
