It has been six years since Alice Cooper put out the varied and highly entertaining, Welcome 2 My Nightmare, a sequel to his all time classic solo album. Now in 2017 he is back and has some highly enjoyable new Paranormal music for you to listen to.
Right off the bat, I was surprised at how ’70s this record sounded. Despite the throw backs on the previous record, it still felt up to date. Paranormal on the other hand has a very ’70s style to it, one that I really love. The opening title track is one of the finest songs I have heard from Alice Cooper in a long time and it is not the only winner here. I also loved Paranoiac Personality, Fallen in Love and The Sound of A. Each song has some tasteful riffs, solid groove and the usual witty snarl and lyrical content you’d except from Cooper.
I’m not comparing this record to the Alice Cooper band hey day, but it has a similar garage rock feel and even manages to achieve some of the same sounds found on those records. The music is clearly not as complex but that works in the albums favour. The twelve tracks come up to a suitably short forty one minutes long and doesn’t get dull for a second. There is a nice range of musicians on here too ranging from Alice’s old band mates Michael Bruce, Neal Smith and Dennis Dunaway (Sadly, the bands original guitarist Glen Buxton passed away twenty years ago and is greatly missed), to Roger Glover of Deep Purple, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and even Bob Ezrin puts in his fair share of work.
No doubt purists from the ’70s will find every problem in this album and those who like Poison and the rest of the ‘hits’ will have no interest in Paranormal at all. But those serious enough to enjoy albums like The Last Temptation, The Eyes of Alice Cooper and the previously mentioned Welcome 2 My Nightmare will definitely enjoy this record.
