Rick Wakeman turn down David Bowie to tour with Yes?

Ex-Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman has spoken of his regret in turning down the opportunity to join Spiders From Mars, the backing group when David Bowie relaunched his career under the name Ziggy Stardust.

Covered by the Daily Express – who have decided that Yes shared a musical palette with Slade, Sweet, T-Rex as a glam rock band – Rick Wakeman told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain that; “I was asked to join Yes and Spiders from Mars with Mick Ronson and David [Bowie] on the same day.”

“I talked to David and the problem was that if I joined Spiders from Mars, yes I would be playing all of David‘s music which I loved dearly and working with David who was the best person I ever worked with but if you’re part of a band you get a chance to actually contribute a lot more of your own style and what you want to do.

“And I spoke with David about it and he said absolutely that’s the right decision… but I often wonder what might have been.”

David Bowie passed away on 10th January 2016 after an eighteen month battle with cancer.
